CAE-1 is een nieuwe netwerkverbinding van 100 gigabit per seconde (Gbps) tussen Singapore en Londen, bestemd voor onderzoek en onderwijs. Het consortium bestaat uit AARNet (Australië), GéANT (Europa), NORDUnet (Scandinavische landen), SingAREN (Singapore), SURF (Nederland) en TEIN*CC (Azië & Stille Oceaan).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>De nieuwe netwerkverbinding voldoet aan de snelgroeiende bandbreedtebehoefte van intercontinentaal onderwijs en de data-intensieve wetenschappelijke samenwerking tussen Europa en Azië. Het consortium van R&E-netwerken maakt meer mogelijk dan wat een enkel R&E-netwerk kan bieden: de verbinding overbrugt een afstand van circa 13.000 kilometer en 11 tijdzones.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cem>\"SURF bundelt graag haar krachten met onderzoeks- en onderwijsnetwerken over de hele wereld om de netwerkverbinding met Azië te verbeteren. Het zorgt voor kortere, snellere en goedkopere verbindingen voor onderzoek en onderwijs. De nieuwe 100 Gbps-verbinding wordt gerouteerd via de Rode Zee en de Indische Oceaan. Dit pad tussen de twee continenten is korter dan de weg die veel van het R&E-verkeer tot nu toe heeft afgelegd: via de Noord-Atlantische Oceaan, over Noord-Amerika en de Stille Oceaan. Een directere en kortere route tussen Azië en Europa garandeert een lagere latency en lagere kosten: voorwaarden voor het toenemend R&E-verkeer tussen de twee continenten. Na de eerste tests die op 15 april 2019 begonnen, is de koppeling in mei 2019 in productie gegaan.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Wereldwijde netwerkarchitectuur\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>CAE-1 is nauw verbonden met twee andere, recent opgezette intercontinentale R&E-netwerksamenwerkingsverbanden, te weten de Advanced North Atlantic Collaboration (ANA) en de AsiaPacific Ring (APR). Al deze initiatieven maken deel uit van de Global Network Architecture (GNA). GNA is een internationale inspanning om wereldwijde samenwerkingsprincipes te ontwikkelen, zowel op technisch niveau als met betrekking tot het delen van kosten en afstemmen van investeringen.
