Learning and talking about Perl 5 and 6: that is what the participants of The Perl Conference on August 9th, 10th, and 11th at B.Amsterdam are going to be doing. The annual conference about the programming language, which used to be known as YACP::EU, is coming to the Netherlands this year. Inventor Larry Wall will also be present.
The three inspiring days of the conference will mostly be filled with speeches by iconic figures in the Perl world, lightning-speed Lightning Talks, and presentations by visitors. Visitors will also have the opportunity to do some programming themselves in the workspaces that will be available for that purpose. On top of this regular programme, lots of other things will be organised.
Perl conferences once started out as low-threshold gatherings, organised by so-called Perl Mongers, Perl users and enthusiasts from cities all over the world. They grew from there. The primary focus at these conferences is on enjoying one another’s ideas, discovering new concepts, and sharing one another’s enthusiasm about programming using Perl 5 and 6.
This year’s theme will be ‘High-End Perl’. Author, speaker, and Perl programmer Curtis ‘Ovid’ Poe describes High-End Perl as “cleanly written Modern Perl that excels at getting difficult tasks done with minimal effort.” Many of the presentations and talks will revolve around this topic. Apart from Curtis ‘Ovid’ Poe, other authors and Perl programmers such as brian d foy, Matt S Trout, and Damian Conway will be speaking. And a Perl conference would not be complete without the inventor of Perl, so Larry Wall will also present a talk.
There will be a lot for the attendees to enjoy: the free coffee and lunch that will be provided, the warmth of the Perl community, and the many dinners and outings organised by local Perl Mongers. The organisers are keeping people up to date via the Facebook page (facebook.com/theperlconference) and Twitter (twitter.com/TPCiA).
Tickets vary in price; students can get one starting at 65 euros, and employers can obtain tickets for their employees for 365 euros. Tickets for private individuals are 145 euros. For ticket sales, please go to: theperlconference.amsterdam/tickets.html
As Damian Conway puts it: “Perl conferences are like no other conference in that they offer presentations by genuinely intriguing people on a vast range of unexpected and fascinating topics.”
The working language for the conference will primarily be English. The conference will take place at B.Amsterdam on 763a Johan Huizingalaan in Amsterdam.
