Air Cargo Netherlands en BigMile slaan de handen ineen voor CO2-reductie in luchtvracht

Air Cargo Netherlands (ACN), brancheorganisatie voor de luchtvrachtindustrie in Nederland, en softwareleverancier BigMile gaan samenwerken om leden van ACN te ondersteunen bij het verminderen van hun CO2-uitstoot. ‘Het doel is niet alleen bewustwording te creëren, maar ook om gezamenlijk onze leden te mobiliseren voor concrete CO2-reductiemaatregelen’, zegt ACN-directeur Maarten van As.

Het bedrijfsleven staat voor de opgave om de komende jaren te verduurzamen. Zo moet in 2030 de CO2-uitstoot met 30 procent zijn gereduceerd, met als einddoel om per 2050 klimaatneutrale logistieke ketens te hebben. Dit geldt ook voor de luchtvaart, dat wereldwijd verantwoordelijk voor twee procent van alle CO2-emissies.

‘Waar luchtvaart voorheen stond voor vooruitgang en moderne tijden, spelen in de discussies die nu worden gevoerd ook het milieu en overlast voor de omgeving een belangrijke rol. De luchtvrachtindustrie zal dus ook zijn verantwoordelijkheid moeten nemen en ambitie moeten tonen met betrekking tot het verkleinen van de CO2-footprint’, zegt Maarten van As, die in zijn functie als directeur van ACN opkomt voor de belangen van de luchtvracht.

Bedrijven ondersteunen

Als brancheorganisatie heeft ACN daarom samen met circa twintig toonaangevende transportorganisaties en kennisinstellingen het duurzaamheidsplan Slim en Duurzaam ondertekend in 2018. Het doel van dit gezamenlijke actieplan is om de CO2-uitstoot van de luchtvaart vanuit Nederland in 2030 terug te brengen tot het niveau van 2005.

ACN wil daarbij een platform bieden waar partijen de kennis die ze daarbinnen opdoen kunnen uitwisselen en zo van elkaar kunnen leren. Van As: ‘We vinden het belangrijk dat luchtvrachtondernemers toegang hebben tot de juiste informatie en hulp krijgen bij het verduurzamen van hun logistieke processen.’

Samenwerking BigMile

Om leden van ACN te helpen hun CO2-uitstoot in de luchtvrachtketen in beeld te krijgen, is het een samenwerking aangegaan met BigMile, waar in eerste instantie vooral luchtvrachtexpediteurs en -transporteurs profijt van hebben. Zij kunnen nu tegen gereduceerd tarief gebruik maken van de CO2-software van BigMile. Dit SaaS-platform voor het calculeren, rapporteren en communiceren van CO2-uitstoot, geeft gebruikers niet alleen inzicht in de eigen CO2-uitstoot van hun vervoerslogistieke activiteiten, maar ook in die van ketenpartners.

‘BigMile biedt gebruikers met een laagdrempelig en toegankelijk calculatie- en rapportage platform gedetailleerd inzicht om de meest effectieve manieren van CO2-reductie te identificeren. Deze innovatieve aanpak past naadloos bij de duurzaamheidsdoelen van ACN voor de luchtvrachtketen‘, licht Van As toe. ‘Dat maakt dat we in BigMile een waardevolle samenwerkingspartner zien, een tool die waarde toevoegt voor zowel grote ondernemingen als mkb-bedrijven.’

Jan Pronk, managing director van BigMile licht verder toe: ‘Veel bedrijven in luchtvrachtsector worden binnenkort rapportageplichtig of ze zijn het al. Zij kunnen BigMile gebruiken om te voldoen aan die verplichting. Ze kunnen via ons platform gemakkelijk en veilig CO2-data delen in de keten en hierover rapporteren. Daarnaast geven de uitkomsten van de calculaties inzichten die ze kunnen gebruiken voor het verlagen van de first en last mile CO2-uitstoot.’

Air Cargo Netherlands and BigMile are joining forces to reduce carbon emissions from air freight

Air Cargo Netherlands (ACN), the trade association for the air freight industry in the Netherlands, and software supplier BigMile will work together to support ACN members in reducing their CO2 emissions. “The goal is not only to create awareness, but also to jointly mobilize our members for concrete carbon reduction measures,” says ACN director Maarten van As.

The business community faces the challenge of becoming more sustainable in the coming years. For example, CO2 emissions must be reduced by 30% by 2030, with the ultimate goal of achieving climate-neutral transport chains by 2050. This target also applies to the aviation sector, which is responsible for 2% of all CO2 emissions worldwide.

“Whereas aviation used to be seen as a symbol of progress and modernity, its impact on the environment and quality of life for local communities has also become an important part of the discussion nowadays. Therefore, the air freight industry will have to shoulder its responsibility and show commitment to reducing the carbon footprint,” says Maarten van As, who as director of ACN represents the interests of the air freight sector.

Support for businesses

That’s why trade association ACN joined approximately 20 leading transport organizations and knowledge institutions in signing the Netherlands’ Smart and Sustainable Sustainability Plan in 2018. The aim of this joint action plan is to reduce aviation-related CO2 emissions in the Netherlands back to 2005 levels by 2030.

ACN wants to offer a platform where parties can gain knowledge and subsequently share that knowledge to learn from each other. Van As: “We believe it’s important that air freight businesses have access to the right information and receive support to improve the sustainability of their logistics processes.”

Partnership with BigMile

To help its members gain insight into their CO2 emissions in the air freight chain, ACN has entered into a partnership with BigMile. Initially, the partnership will mainly be beneficial for air freight forwarders and transporters, who can now use BigMile’s CO2 software at a discount. This SaaS platform for calculating, reporting and communicating carbon emissions not only gives users insight into the CO2 emissions from their own transport logistics activities, but also into those of supply chain partners.

“With its accessible and easy-to-use calculation and reporting platform, BigMile offers users detailed insights to help them identify the most effective ways of reducing carbon emissions. This innovative approach fits seamlessly with ACN’s sustainability goals for the air freight chain,” Van As explains. “Therefore, we regard BigMile as a valuable collaborative partner, and its tool adds value for businesses of all sizes – from large companies to SMEs.”

Jan Pronk, Managing Director of BigMile, adds: “Many companies in the air freight sector will soon be required to report their carbon emissions, if they are not already. They can use BigMile to comply with that obligation. Using our platform, they can easily and securely share carbon data in the chain and report on it. In addition, the results of the calculations provide insights that they can use to reduce first-mile and last-mile carbon emissions.”
